E-Invoicing in Australia and New Zealand: A Compliance Update
Nov 04, 2024 04:40 PM
Australia began its e-invoicing journey in 2019, partnering with its main trading partner, New Zealand, to adopt the Peppol framework and implement the local Peppol BIS A-NZ format. The goal was to promote e-invoicing and help businesses streamline transactions, reduce costs, and improve payment times.
Over the past five years, adoption has accelerated in both countries, with more and more companies. If you haven’t made the switch yet, now is the ideal time. Here’s why:
The global Peppol initiative
Peppol has become a global standard, with an initiative underway to streamline international e-invoicing. Previously, four different specifications—each incompatible with the others—complicated cross-border invoicing. To boost international interoperability, Peppol is introducing the PINT (Peppol International) format, which includes:
- 80% shared data elements
- 15% aligned data elements
- 5% distinct data elements
This structure allows for local customizations meet country-specific needs while enabling seamless cross-border e-invoice exchange.
Transition to PINT A-NZ format
As part of this global transition, Australia and New Zealand’s Peppol authorities will require the new PINT A-NZ format starting 15 November, with full deprecation of the old BIS 3 A-NZ format by 15 May 2025. To simplify migration for existing users, the PINT A-NZ specifications are closely aligned with the current format, involving minimal changes.
International adoption
Countries like Malaysia and Japan have already adopted the PINT format, and Singapore is expected to follow suit by the end of the year.
